You’ve heard it both ways. Your last agency said SEO takes 6 months and charged you €500/month with nothing to show. Your mate says it’s all a scam and the only way to get clients is word of mouth.
So who’s right?
The honest answer: SEO isn’t a scam. But most SEO services sold to small businesses are a waste of money. Here’s why, and what actually works.
Why most small business SEO services don’t work
The typical small business SEO package looks like this:
- They run an automated audit tool (free software, takes 10 seconds)
- They send you a monthly report with graphs you don’t understand
- They talk about “building backlinks” (often low-quality or automated)
- They promise results “in 6-12 months” (so you keep paying before questioning it)
- They lock you into a contract so you can’t leave when nothing happens
This model exists because it’s profitable, not because it works. One SEO consultant can run this same package for 50 clients simultaneously. It’s not personalised. It’s not strategic. It’s a template with your logo on it.
What actually works for small businesses
1. Google Business Profile (free)
If you serve local clients, this is 80% of your SEO. A complete, verified Google Business Profile with photos, reviews, correct opening hours, and regular posts. This is what puts you in the map pack when someone searches “plumber near me.” It’s free. Most small businesses either don’t have one or haven’t updated it in years.
2. A fast, mobile-friendly website
Google rewards sites that load quickly and work well on phones. If your site takes 5+ seconds to load or doesn’t work properly on mobile, you’re being penalised before you even start.
3. Content that answers what your clients actually search
Not “industry insights” or “thought leadership.” Write answers to the questions your clients actually ask you. “How much does [your service] cost?” “What’s the difference between [option A] and [option B]?” “How long does [your service] take?” These are the things people type into Google. Answer them on your website and Google will send those people to you.
4. Reviews
Ask happy clients to leave a Google review. This directly affects your visibility in local searches. More reviews = more trust = higher rankings. No agency needed.
The decision tree
- Local business (serve clients in a specific area)? You probably don’t need to pay for SEO at all. Google Business Profile + a fast site + content + reviews. That’s it.
- Competing nationally or internationally? You might need SEO help, but look for someone who explains what they do in plain language and shows results in terms of leads, not graphs.
- Currently paying for SEO with no results after 4+ months? Fire them. Use the money for something else. The right SEO should show movement within 3 months, even if rankings take longer.
Bottom line
SEO is real. It works. But for most small businesses, you don’t need a €500/month “SEO package.” You need a well-built website that loads fast, content that matches what people search, and a Google Business Profile that’s actually complete.
That’s not a separate monthly invoice. That’s just… how a website should be built in the first place.
